Farmer's Friend by Wellman Farms
"Farmer's Friend"---should be called Stoner's Friend!
Wellman Farms are quality cannabis growers out of Lowell, MA. Farmer's Freind is their budget line, machine-trimmed flower Blue River Terps retails for $30 an eighth, while Wellman's headstash runs for $43 before tax.
I first tried the brand last summer. My oldest son was visiting colleges before his senior year at high school and we were checking out UMass Amherst. It was a beautiful campus and the charming town brought back memories. It was nice to get out of the city and to be able to spend time with my son. At the same time he was feeling overwhelmed and the whole experience brought out a lot of stress. Money was tight, I was in between jobs as the secondary earner in the family; I had been cutting back on trees and getting irritable, drinking too much coffee---I needed something to help balance me, mind and spirit: which is what cannabis did for me from the first time 24 years ago.
On the ride back I checked out Blue River's menu, not expecting to find anything great on my budget. But they had just received some new product to their inventory! This was the first time I had seen Farmer's Freind. When I got back to Cambridge I decided to try the MAC #1.
Hallelujah. This was some life-changing flower. I had never smoked any Alien Cookies before. The flavor was nothing out of this world; on the contrary it was earthy, with spicy floral notes. But the experience...yeah, I got stoned and one bowl was sufficient to get me high, but it was more than that. I really felt a tremendous sense of tranquility and harmony. Maybe the clean air had followed me back from among the leafy tree-tops of peaceful Amherst. Maybe cannabis just has the magical ability to fit the lock in my soul and, unlike other drugs and religions that promise something better than this, to appreciate how perfect life is, every moment and everything that happens woven into a complex tapestry that is never finished unravelling and yet somehow complete and still at every moment. We could dig further into this 2,500-year-old debate between Heraclitus and Parmenides, but I wonder if the folks over at Harvard's Loeb Classical Library would wanta share a bowl and figure it out?
In conclusion I would highly recommend the MAC #1 for a good, balanced high that will melt the stress of modern life without diverting you from the constant focus that life requires, or leaving you drooling over a pile of candy wrappers. FYI the MAC #31 is more sativa-leaning with a little more cerebral quality, not quite as introspective, more of a hedonistic euphoria, a buzz that tingles up your spine and lights up the sky.
If you are in the mood for an indulgent sativa, although not necessarily looking for that really heady buzz, check out their Mango Haze. I usually find Farmer's Freind's herb to be "functional"---whether that function is bringing spiritual balance to the day, calming the nerves, or getting f---ed up: but Mango Haze is purely for pleasure. The generous dose of myrcene these buds produce will have you smoking just to smoke, high be damned. The cannabinoids in this don't overwhelm me; the crops fluctuate in THC content but usually have some THCV as well. You will get high, but you'll just wanna keep smoking. I recommend rolling it. A slight spiciness gives way to the creamy mango myrcene, accentuated by limonene, those classic sativa genetics...back in the day even though it was such poor quality, low-potency herb there was something about that crappy commercial weed from Mexico that I would occasionally miss when smoking bomb indica. It has a certain smell that I sometimes pick up from good quality herb nowadays and I get a little confused. And what's all this bullshit about myrcene being the difference between a sativa and an indica? But we'll get into that another time. Right now I'd like to challenge the conventional wisdom of sativa/daytime and indica/nighttime to suggest smoking joints of this at night while singing along to classic weed songs like Megadeth's Mary Jane and Sidney Bechet's century-old recording of Viper Mad.
Some other strains I have tried by Farmer's Friend include:
THC you later...
